Visiting for the First Time?In our aging, but majestic sanctuary, with stained glass windows, ornate chandeliers and wooden pews that date from the church’s original construction in 1925, you’ll find worship that combines reverence for the ancient tradition and a message that is relevant to life in the 21st century. Whether it is the tremendous skills of our organist and instrumental musicians, or the blend of music sung by our gifted Chancel Choir, you will enjoy an hour that invites you into thankfulness, reflection, and readiness for whatever you face in the coming week. The church’s address is 2100 J Street, but the entrance to the Sanctuary is on 21st Street, where you will find a fully-accessible entrance to the courtyard, as well as the buildings. Worship begins at 10:30 a.m. and lasts approximately one hour. There is an offering taken in every worship service, but visitors are welcome simply to be our guests. You should not feel compelled to give money to the church when you visit. But we also offer, at the offering time in every worship service, an opportunity to fill out a card that says “Here I Am, God”, and invites you to offer yourself, or something you are planning to do in the next week, to God’s ongoing work of love and justice in the world. You’ll see a wide variety of dress when you visit First Church—from coats and jackets, dresses and suits to jeans and t-shirts. Be comfortable; just come. |
