Interim Pastor John Sublett

Dear Friends -  The recent tragic violence in Arizona has stirred up a lot of reflection and discussion. The level of violence we see in political rhetoric, in the media, and in the way nations relate to nations calls for a word from the church. We who follow Jesus know there is another way.

I believe that our choice of that other way, our protest against the ways of violence, our seeking to model the way of peace will make a difference. That’s not the way of the world around us. But when the church is at its best, it speaks a word that challenges the values of the world. It speaks with a prophetic voice.

I recently read Andrew Bacevich’s book Washington Rules in which he argues that we have moved in recent decades toward a state of perpetual war and that you and I as part of this society have let that happen. It will not change unless we change the rules, the expectations, and the values that shape our common life. I think the church has a role to play in fostering that change.

There is a lot to think about and to talk about. After meeting recently with the folks who look after our church web site, I want to encourage you to visit the site and where there is opportunity to express your opinion or join a dialogue do so.

I want to say thanks to Conie Fanos and Lynette Fazio who have taken on the editorship of the Visitor. Let them know you have read it and pass along any ideas you have for making it a better means of communication within the congregation.

Finally, Larry and I are pleased to be on track to complete our interim pastorate with you at the end of April. The news that Rev. Don Lee will become the pastor of FUMC on May 1 is good news that suggests a bright future for this congregation. We will be working to prepare for his coming and to provide for a smooth transition.

Peace, John
